The Discs on Horizontal Dowel – Wavy Dowel is a more advanced variation of the Montessori discs-on-dowel activity. It features a wooden base with a metal upright post and a wavy horizontal dowel. A green disc is placed on the dowel for the child to carefully guide along the curved path.
Unlike the straight dowel version, the wavy dowel requires more wrist rotation and adjustment. As the child moves the disc along the curves, they naturally practice flexible wrist movement, hand control, and problem-solving through movement. The child must slow down, observe the path, and coordinate the hand with the shape of the dowel.
This variation is especially useful once the child has experience with simpler horizontal dowel work and is ready for a more challenging movement pattern.
